That's because you don't see continuous unlimited return grills, you
know that Ron. That's like comparing a paper cut to a missing finger
and telling me I don't need a band-aid.
Return Plenum is irrelevant (we as far as sprinklers are concerned).
As already pointed out, it's no longer a concealed space.
On a related theme, we believe that a small opening (say no more than
12 inches wide) around the perimeter does not present the same problem
since the centerline of the fire is away from the wall so a
significant amount of the heat will be caught by the ceiling. That
naturally must be discussed with the AHJ beforehand.
