NFPA 13 2002 Edition - Section 8.14.1.2.2 - "Noncombustible and limited
combustible concealed spaces with limited access and not permitting occupancy
or storage or combustibles shall not require sprinkler protection. The space
shall be considered a concealed space even with small openings such as those
used as return air for a plenum".

Maybe I did not describe correctly the ceiling construction. The ceiling will
be installed throughout the space(s) at the same elevation. The "openings" are
7" gaps along the perimeter walls or between sections of the ceiling within the
room. This only occurs in a few of the spaces/rooms and those rooms are
separated by full height wall from other spaces.

I believe the section above may adequately address this issue to the point I
can meet with AHJ concerning sprinkler protection above the ceiling space.

Subject: RE: Floating Ceilings

The floating ceiling question is commonly asked during live seminars... if
the ceiling is floating and not attached (connected to; touching) the walls,
the area above the ceiling is required to be protected regardless of the type
or combustibility of construction.
