In the back of the FPRF report, there is a list
of marina and boat storage fires. Some are rack buildings.
Interestingly, I was talking to one of my local
marina's about a shed where they store 30+ ft
boats for the winter. In addition to sprinklers
at the roof, I suggested a lower network of pipe
where you could feed sprinklers off of Flexhead
drops into the cabins through hatchways. Probably
not ideal, but could help alleviate the shielded fire issue a little.

Where are all those expert FPE/PE/ME's when ya

Who insures these type of facilities? Surely
someone somewhere has some data relating to the
hazards present, fuel loading, protection
schemes, fire prevention procedures, fire history etc. ???????
We know what the materials we're dealing with
are, we know what the arrangement of the storage
is, we know there will be fuels floating on
water, we have a lot of info. Just need the
time to really analyze it and do some modeling maybe?
I know part of the concern is the loading of
open boats with water and the effect of that on
the structure, doesn't do a lot of good to keep
it from burning if it is destroyed by falling
off the rack or having something above fall on
it. Also don't want to collapse the entire structure.
Had a look at the Vortex system by Victaulic,
low water output but it appeared to have
extinguishing capabilities like FM-200 without
all the containment restrictions. That could
answer the water loading the boats issue, water mist on steroids.
Foam or foam-water appear to be logical choices
but then there can be environmental issues.
Not an easy solution but there has to be something.

Subject: Boat Storage
what bothers me is a client has come to us,
asked us to protect his product, and we throw are hands up.
we should offer him something. Completely
indemnify yourself, but to say there is
"nothing" that can protect boats when we just
got through glorifying sprinklers in compartments, don't float.
sure, a compartment is relatively easy to
sprinkLER relative to rack storage of
expanded-foam-filled plastic, but it can't be impossible.
I would give the client a design. Tell them
this is what it will cost, and tell them to
grant your company complete indemnity.
You want to help them, but you have to preserve
your company's life, too. This insecure
solution for the client, still may be what they
want...rather than simply operating naked.
The republic government offers the marvel of a
judicial system, which is a proven vehicle when
filled with rational, even rationally
compassionate thinking jurists. but the
judicial system is broke and a joke if decisions
are rendered by a quorom of
incompetents. People should get paid
full-salary to serve jury duty, because the
present system is not working -- well.
