Where are all those expert FPE/PE/ME's when ya need 'em? (just kidding, well sort of)
Who insures these type of facilities? Surely someone somewhere has some data relating to the hazards present, fuel loading, protection schemes, fire prevention procedures, fire history etc. ??????? We know what the materials we're dealing with are, we know what the arrangement of the storage is, we know there will be fuels floating on water, we have a lot of info. Just need the time to really analyze it and do some modeling maybe? I know part of the concern is the loading of open boats with water and the effect of that on the structure, doesn't do a lot of good to keep it from burning if it is destroyed by falling off the rack or having something above fall on it. Also don't want to collapse the entire structure. Had a look at the Vortex system by Victaulic, low water output but it appeared to have extinguishing capabilities like FM-200 without all the containment restrictions. That could answer the water loading the boats issue, water mist on steroids. Foam or foam-water appear to be logical choices but then there can be environmental issues. Not an easy solution but there has to be something. Craig L.
