Another of my servers (minimserver) expects the m3u file to have extension m3u8 (since many of my file names are in UTF-8). If I do that minimserver is fine and dandy with European character sets. So I thought I'd try that extension.
That's most likely a conflict with the PlayHLS or some BBC plugin. m3u8 is considered by them as HLS streams (see the error message you posted).
