I changed the performance settings to ramp up the RAM on scanning (only
setting I changed: Scanner Priority up to -20). I'm guessing turning off
pre-caching of artwork will mean my Squeezebox players take longer to
display each tracks art when they play, so I left this turned on - is my
assumption correct?  Performance settings:

I still believe that the biggest improvement you'd see would be by adding memory (or running LMS on a different machine). There's no hard number, but I remember that in my testing the memory options I thought that the critical number where the "maximum memory" option would really kick in was around 30-40k tracks. You are dealing with almost this number, but with only 256MB of RAM. I bet your system is spending a lot of time waiting for the disk to read data which would be buffered in memory if you had more of it... cranking up the memory option likely won't help at all, as the system will page more memory to disk if LMS was requesting more RAM.
