I think that I've exposed my personal bias in regards to this issue of "area superintendents" in our school district.

As the list manager, let me state, that I think that it is important that we address this issue head on, because it comes up so frequently in public meetings about the district and is either:

 - an issue of vital importance to public education in St. Paul
 - or a huge distraction from more important topics

Let me also say, that I'm a little disappointed (but hopeful) about the school districts response to these concerns. I'd like to see more information.

Therefor - let me challenge the forum to move beyond the "they must not be necessary, because I don't understand them" level of discussion, to a level based upon personal experiences and/or real information.

For those who have had personal experience dealing with area superintendents in the school district, could you please help fill the information void.

Please consider answering one or more of the following questions:

1) Based upon "YOUR" experience, what role do area superintendents fill in our school district?

2) Do you have any sense of how important this level of administration is managing a district the size of St. Paul's (pro or con)?

3) CORPORATE FOLKS: If you work in large company, can you comment on or make comparison's about how a company with over 6,000 employees and 43,000 students (whatever the corporate comparison might be) is managed at the top level. Would 5, vice presidents (or top level executives) seem excessive?

Hopefully, this will help us move this discussion forward.

Best wishes,
