I found it interesting that the same article by Steve Berg showed a light rail line that stopped at Union Depot -- and then picked up as the Red Rock line to Hastings.
This is interesting, since the "Heavy Rail" Red Rock line has already been planned, and would go from the end of the Northstar line in Minneapolis to Hastings. All that, and for only 261M$ -- about half what I remember just the University Avenue part of Lite Rail costing.

But alas, just as Hiawatha snuck under the wire, Northstar did not. And Red Rock didn't come close, hence the website is out of date. Oh well.
(not that "Lite" Rail is any lighter than "Heavy" Rail in the end).
