I am a huge fan of light rail, and other means of transportation to link into light rail. I think this idea needs to be more developed and understand that the Hiawatha corridor residents are already having trouble with all of the on street parking being taken for light rail riders. Apparently there were not enough park and ride lots provided along the route, so the neighborhoods are filliing up with people who need to park their cars to ride the rail.
I would think that these necessities would have been planned prior to the opening. I do want to say that the corridor and the stations were beautifully planned and landscaped with prairie grasses and ornate railings that if maintained with continue to be beautiful from time to come. In 1999 when the Ventura administration was putting together the first corridor plan, they had the option of putting in another corridor to run east/west from Woodbury or Saint Paul all the way out past General Mills with more federal subsidy. They were nervous the legislature would not pass both with the price tag the state would have to incur so they went with one corridor to start with. I think that with the inception of the Northstar Corridor, which I am also in favor of, we can really develop something that would service a major slice of the population in the years to come. As the road infrastructure is less and less maintained as it is now, particularly the with regards to city streets not being repaired on a regular schedule, that coupled with the in-city congestion we all experience in going from point A to point B especially during rush hour, and with parking costs increasing, I would gladly tae the rail when I can. I have many friends who elect ot take the rail downtown to go out in the evenings for dinner rather than park.
