Unknown is the hostname that given when Solaris is DHCP client and no host name is provided via DNS/NIS/NIS+.

Not sure about Solaris 11, but Solaris 10 stores the hostname in at least three places . /etc/hosts /etc/nodename, and /etc/host.intf

Possible that the hosts file was changed to reflect a new name, but not the others and, more importantly, that the box was a dhcp client while utsetup was ran?

Beats me, it defaulted to unknown instead of localhost.

And yeah right - /etc/hosts was of course missing 'unknown' that's why
./utsetup failed ;-)

But, what is the purpose of unknown? Should it not just default to localhost?
