This happens to be once in a blue moon.
Black screen after the gong.
When I look at the PCI cards, the light on the Intio Miles UW card stays lit,
which means something's hung up at the PCI bus. (correct jargon ?)
But the problem is corrected when I replace the non-Apple UltimateRez card
(8mb) with the 4 mb Twin Turbo that came with the machine.
Everything is back to normal afterwhich I can reinstall the UltimateRez.
Since I prefer to keep the Initio and Tempo cards in Slots 1 and 2, this is a
minor inconvenience for a machine I've owned new since late 1998 and is still
chugging along just fine with OS 9.1.
