When I had this problem in my C600 it was because the SCSI drive to too long to spin up. The computer got tired of waiting, so to speak, and would find another bootable device. Of course on restart, the SCSI drive is already spun up, so no waiting involved. When I wanted to boot from the SCSI drive, I would do the 3 finger restart about 10 seconds after hitting the start button. By the way, I no longer have that problem.
