Other than keeping the guts of the system safe and sound and sheilding some
RF emissions, all it did was ensure that the fans could work efficiently.
The card guide that's attached to the door, however, was important to ensure
that the processor cards were held in place, perfectly perpendicular to the
logic board.

Some people deliberately removed the card guides from the inside of their
S900 door (I can't recall why, although once removed, they could be really
tricky to get back in place) and found that in some cases, the edge of the
processor would droop downwards, breaking proper contact with the pins in
the slot. Processor cards with fans on them (the heavier ones) were usually
the most prone to this. As the machine heated up, the internal plastics
softened, and the weight and slight vibration of that fan was enough to
cause problems.

As for G3 cards, some weigh more or less than others, some had extenders
that would fit into the card guide and thus ensure proper alignment, and
some were so small & light without these extenders that it didn't matter
whether the guide was supporting them on the other end or not.

Neither of the "FrankenMac" S900's in my family are in proper cases, so I
have little wire twist-ties suspending the edge of the processor card from
the drive bays.

Hope this helps.
