Nancy
I tried this but as I feared it didn't work...

The problem is that I can *ONLY* start OS9 with shift key down and I
can't get at the Monitors control panel or Formac ProGraphics when
it's in this state.

I have been turning off all the extensions to try to get into OS9 but
even with ALL turned off it won't restart without going into the grey
flashing mode. I just don't understand what is the difference between
no extensions selected and shift restart.

Looks like I'm up a creek with no paddle! I will just have to try
rebuilding from scratch as Jeff suggested...

Thanks for all the suggestions.
