Starting with the shift key down tells the computer to load only that
software absolutely essential to boot. When a disk will only boot like that,
a software problem is indicated, such as corrupted files, conflicting
processes, or unmet dependencies--software loading in the wrong order.
This can further be complicated by corrupted preference files that mess up a
process when it tries to read the file.
