I'm on the west coast. It was actually only midnight or 1:00a. I'm pretty
sure I was asleep before 2:00a.

There were a good number of SuperMacs for which holding down the C key
simply will not work. It wasn't supposed to. I can't recall what the
common thread was, but none of my S900s could ever boot from CD by holding
the C key down. I think my J710 can.

<CMD><OPT><SHFT><DEL> does what it does very reliably on all Macs of that
era, but one must understand precisely what it's doing. It instructs the
Mac to boot from the next bootable SCSI device *after* SCSI ID#0. So, if
you have another drive with a good System Folder on it and its SCSI ID# is
1, the machine will boot from that. If the next such ID the Mac finds is
#3, which is typically the CD-ROM drive, the Mac will boot from that
(assuming you have a proper, bootable CD inserted). If this fails and you
have a stock Zip drive (typically SCSI ID#5) with a bootable Zip disk
inserted, the machine will boot from that.

It actually gives one a lot more flexibility than just holding down the C
key.

Hope this helps.
