This is a very good point. Recent versions of IomegaWare include a utility to create a bootable disk based on the System Suitcase of your boot volume. This leaves you with some 70 MB or so of free space for diagnostic and repair utilities, some of which might not work too well from a r/o CD-R--like Retrospect, for instance. Having a tape back up doesn't do you much good if you can't boot up and restore from it. I should also note that IomegaWare's bad rep lingers from the "Driver Wars of '98" when no-one seemed to be getting it right and everything seemed to conflict. After version 2.7 [Summer, 2000?], the init has been so clean it can be placed in the Extensions folder of a bootable CD-R without conflict. I don't recommend trying that with anything from FWB, Charismac, or Lacie. Also, when the IomegaWare utility is used, driver partitions, both IDE and SCSI, are created, so the driver does not always have to be loaded from the Extensions folder of the boot disk if the Zip is present at boot. I have seen some mechanisms where the Zip jams if it is engaged at startup, but they were internal SCSI refurbs. That said, there was a class action settlement over the "click of death" syndrome. -- Paul F. Henegan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
