Phillip, I do have the scanner attached to external SCSI, the original narrow SCSI bus that came with the S900. It is daisy-chained in with a number of other SCSI devices. That brings up another point: do you know if yours is properly terminated? I hear that X is considerably more picky about termination than 9 was. Just a thought.
