Paul,

CUDA is a microcomputer that controls the over all hardware configuration;
zapping it erases the non-volatile RAM which remembers where things are on
the various buses and forces the CUDA to reconfigure itself.

PRAM is another form of non-volatile RAM which stores various preferences
that are useful at startup.

There is a third form of non-volatile RAM called, oddly enough, NVRAM, which
stores mainly networking and communications info, but has been to know to be
"hacked" for other purposes.
