Uh, I failed to mention one very important item if you want to get into any form of graphics - a pen tablet.
Besides, once you start using a tablet exclusively in place of a mouse, your wrist will thank you for it. Unfortunately, an acceptible size (at least for graphics) would start at around 6x8 and prices have not dropped in line with computers. Plus you will have to decide if you want to search for a used ADB device or buy a USB card and the newer USB tablets. The new USB setup alone will add close to $400 to your budget. Last I checked a 6x8 Wacom still costs over $300 and that's what I paid when I bought the ADB version a number of years ago. The USB tablet would migrate to a newer Apple machine, so if you want to stick with your plans for the long haul I would invest in a new one.
