Our DSL service does not uses "MacPoet" it uses PPPoE (PPP over 
Ethernet).  I assume the MacPoet is something similar.  However, Alan 
may have to explain it further.

Well, yes, DSL does just provide you with an IP address.  But your 
computer does have to have a common means of communicating with the DSL 
equipment to access that IP address.
