The DSL connections I've seen still require you to "dial a number" to 
actually connect.   It's not like a cable modem - which is basically just an 
ethernet connection.

Also, if his DSL modem is connected via a USB port (instead of ethernet) 
then he probably is using PPPoA, which brings it's own set of problems.    
PPPoA is being phased out around here.   People with USB DSL modems are 
trading them in for Ethernet (PPPoE) modems, and experiencing much fewer 
problems.

I've had a cable modem for about 4 years now.   It started off as Mediaone, 
then it was AT&T broadband, now it's Comcast!   It's always worked well, 
however.   It has also always been shared among the various computers here.  
  My main Windows machine has 2 network cards - one goes to the modem, the 
other goes to the hub.   Windows XP (and the newly installed Windows 2003 
Server RC2) handle the sharing/firewalling.    I've got other Windows 
computers (both wired and wireless), a wireless Pocket PC and this OS X 
machine all using it.
