Okay here is more or less how it goes. With DSL, it uses DHCP to assign
the IP, but the network won't recognize your requests until you have
logged into their system. What MacPoet and the other PPPoE (you were
right Nancy, MacPoet is for the same reason as PPPoE) software does, is
do the equivilent of dialing up with a regular modem. They send out a
login request with your username and password (usually your email addy
and some random junk) which will basically turn you on.

Remember, even though it is a dedicated connection, you are using the
switch, so the company wants you off the network so that they can use
the switch connection for something else. When you login they will turn
a switch over to you. As long as there is activity, you keep that
switch connection.

This isn't fully accurate, but good enough for most people. PPPoE is
just so damn complicated compared to a regular LAN.

One note, this is a good reason to get a router, most can keep a PPPoE
connection alive. Or they can work like normal, but your computer won't
know the difference, it'll stay online with the router and when it
receives a request from the LAN, the router will connect automatically
without your intervention.
