I feel silly mentioning my routine again but it has served me well.

For our aging machines, an external SCSI CD burner is a very handy thing to
have.
Using either Hard Disk Speel Tools or Disk Warrior CD, I boot up while
holding down Ctr/Opt/Shft/Del keys to force boot from the external drive.
This would allow you to boot up the machine without disturbing the internal
hard drive.

For your situation I would run DiskWarrior and then go ahead and run
DiskOptimizer.

Do you have access to an external SCSI drive as well as a copy of DiscWarrior
?
