Hello listees,

I disconnected the internal drive from the internal bus last night, and
tried booting from the CDROM with the original Supermac system CD. It took
about twelve trys, but I finally got it to get all the way thru the
booting, and display the desktop and icons, and the mouse responding. Once
it was there, I could open up the applications with no trouble, but of
course, there was no other drive on the bus to do interact with.

I suspect that the unterminated internal SCSI bus is the reason for having
to try so many times to boot it. The computer will not go to the CDROM to
boot if the probably-defective HD is on the bus, even with the C key held,
or the CTL/SHFT/DEL/OPTN keys held down.

There is no second internal bus that I can see, at least none with a cable
hanging from it, inside the computer. There is a 50 pin socket near the
25 pin SCSI external socket at the rear of the main PCB. I don't have any
other bus cables at this point.

I'm thinking that further work will have to await the arrival of the new
HD, which will be a 50pin 4GB type scsi HD, unless anyone has any further
ideas.

I'm considering both upgrading the system from 7.6, as well as a PCI card
to run both an ext drive and possibly a CD burner (both hopefully would
be more modern types, if the system can run them).

More soon,

cal
