Hi there,

I've got Jaguar 10.2.4 running on a Umax C500. I installed it with XPost facto from a G4 Install/Restore DVD which I had disc imaged to a partition of the hard drive.
In terms of performance, it is pretty sluggish - probably due to the C500 only having 64MB of ram! I've tried to expand this to 144, but have had a lot of problems finding RAM that doesn't hang my machine on boot! In addition you definitely want a fast OS X compatible video card, if you can get your hands one one.

My current set up is as follows:

C500 64MB/40G
No CD
Realtek 8139 ethernet card with OS X drivers installed
VillageTronic video card
Phase5 Aptus G3/300 Ziff

Things I'd watch out for:

i) I killed the machine completely, by attempting to update to 10.2.8 via software update.
ii) For some reason network access is pretty solid, however if I try to shell to the C500 from another machine it knocks it over. Built in ethernet users will probably fare much better.

Finally - don't expect it to be too fast - in my experience 10.2 is pretty slow on anything below a G4 though I am happy enough as I use it pretty much as a P2P client

If I was trying to use it as an everyday computer it would be intolerable. Something like Yellow Dog Linux would probably be more usable, but that is all a bit complicated for me!

Good luck,

David

jaguar is 10.2; i have it running adequately on a beige g3
at present, but it really can use a better video card than the
stock one. lots of RAM is important too. i'd say that a G3 is
the minimum CPU for 10.2. you probably could get it to work
on a stock umax, but it'll probably be pretty d*mn slow.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Inquiring because I now have an extra s900 as well as a PowerTower Pro as
platforms to tinker with X.
Not brave enough to mess with it on the main s900.

Just have to be careful not to get carried away sinking too much into them.

Alan.
