On Thursday, September 05, 2002 6:52 AM, Alan Kim queried . . .

At the risk of getting lynched, with zillions of threads on X and all, I
want to ask a "yes/no" question and I'll start a search from there....

1. If I am currently at 9.1 and purchased a legal copy of Jaguar (or any
retail version of X), can I install X straight from 9.1 ?
Uh, this would be for an S900 w/ NewerTech 250/166 G3.

Loaded questions for sure but as I said, a very blunt "yes" or "no"
would be enough for me to start combing through the archives and
elsewhere for more details on such things as Xpostfacto, etc.

Thanks,

Alan
Perfectly content with 9.1 but finally a bit curious about all the fuss
over X....

Alan,

I just took the plunge myself with an S900, UltraPlex 32X CD, Sonnet G4-450,
SIIG EIDE133 PCI card, Barricuda 60GB EIDE drive partitioned into 6 9.2GB
partitions. All the card slots are full, Intex USB, Adaptec FW, Orange Micro
UW SCSI, ATI Rage Pro Video. I used XpostFacto 2.2, Apple Drive setup from
MacOS 9.1 to partition the drive, Installed 9.1, ran XpostFacto and a little
over an hour later, I was up on Jaguar. I named 1 partition Jaguar, 1
Classic, and 1 MacOS 9.1. (Still working on names for the other partitions.)

If you intend to separate Classic and your bootable MacOS 9.x, you need to
install MacOS 9 twice, once for bootable and once for X Classic.

Everything worked including; a 60GB Que M3 FW drive, a Logitech 3 button
Scroll mouse, adb KB & mouse, 9 GB UW external SCSI, internal SCSI. Even my
Compact Flash card reader mounted and showed up on the desk top.

However, as some others have pointed out, I can not get "Classic" to start.
It offers to upgrade to 9.2, but then fails to start. (I understand that
some are not having this problem, so YMMV.)

Then, due to my own error, I had to re-install X and 9.1. A few problems,
including the loss of my UW SCSI drive (Now it does not mount or show up).
However, this is a work in process, and I am becoming enthused as I go.

I do recommend that you do not do the install until you have a couple of
days to experiment, debug, or whatever. I have two other Macs (another S900
and a G4-500) so the Xperiment can drag on for a while. I am anxious to test
my internal 1.2GB MO and 1.5GB SyJet drives as well as an External Jaz 1GB.
I am also testing (finally) the Velocity 128MB Dimms. The Xperimental S900
(and the other one as well) are grinding away on my Velocity Sandwich Jeff
Walther. (2 DIMMs have already passed 2500 iterations.) So X is currently
dormant, but not for long.

Good luck.
