Alan- If you're unwilling to jeopardize you stable system why don't you just get a cheap drive to install onto, that way it won't interfere with your current setup. OWC is selling an ultra66 IDE controller for not too much( $54?)- was it SIIG or ACARD ?- I can't remember- with that you can add a cheap drive that you will be able to use on future (new) Macs. Just a thought. While I can't do everything in OSX I find it to be my preferred system for general use. The multitasking aspect of OS X makes up for some of it's lack of speed: I don't have to wait for one thing to finish before I start another. The fact that it is so stable is not to be ignored. I should add that I'm not using a G4, but a 400 Mhz G3. I've got 10.1.5 now, but am eager to go to 10.2 which should be faster by all accounts. Good luck with whatever you decide.
-Ford ps- before you take the leap print out all of Ryan Rempel's instructions from the OWC website. Read the whole thing and you'll be ready.
