I've found that the metal spring contacts inside 1/8" stereo jacks lose their springiness over time, forming poor or nonexistant connections. I can usually fix the problem using a jeweler's screwdriver and a flashlight to bend the spring contacts back into their original positions. If the spring contact is broken off, then you'll have to replace the connector (using your soldering iron).
