Yep, JavaScript/JS and Java are two different things.
Did you actually test? Google Maps is very interactive.

My Java Plugin is SE 6 U15 (6.0.150.3)
Interesting
in Firefox 3.5.3 Java affects zoom, JavaScript does not
in Safari Java does not affect zoom, JavaScript does
back to FF 3.5.3 Now turning off either does not affect zoom
