Yep, JavaScript/JS and Java are two different things.
Did you actually test?    Google Maps is very  interactive.
Here was what I tested with.

My Java Plugin is SE 6 U15 (6.0.150.3)

What makes you think it uses Java?

Yeah. Try disabling Java. I had no problems without Java.
