The only remaining suggestion I have is to check the "Preferences" in
your preferred application to make sure .wmv is selected to play in that
application. Most media players have a section listing all the media
types it can play and allow the user to select or deselect a media type.

After making any changes be sure to reboot XP to make the changes
registered in the registry.

FWIW, I have two entries in my Helper Applications list, for two different MIME types that are handled by Windows Media Player:

video/x-ms-wmv
video/mpeg

These are obviously not both wmv files, but I draw your attention to the possibility of different wmv MIME types being handled differently. I also have:

application/x-mplayer2
video/x-ms-asf
video/x-ms-asf-plugin
audio/x-ms-wax
audio/x-ms-wma
video/x-ms-wm
video/x-ms-wvx

which all play with "Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library (in SeaMonkey)."
