My ISP runs LINUX Redhat, but only supports MSWindows browsers. They
provided me with the dial-up number, my account name and password,
their TCP/IP address and the DNS address and wished me luck. ARACHNE
did just fine. I had to know what Comport, IRQ and speed I had
installed my modem to. And yes I use DOS for all my home use, including
Internet browsing and Email and graphics editing (which admittedly is
usually crude and/or simple).

Most Unix-type ISPs either have a shell account for you as a subscriber
or you actually sign-in to a shell account and start a PPP session for
yourself on their system. On such a system a subscriber probably has
permission for both Pine and Lynx and may be able to do text browsing and
Email management off a simple dialup right in a session on the ISP
system. A UNIX shell user may even have Netscape permission, but probably
not. Essentially FTP and TELNET are shell programs anyway.

Connections can be made to the shell account with nearly any dial-up
program such as: Bitcom, Rlink, PCAnywhere, Procomm, Bananacom, or any of
dozens and dozens of others, freeware, shareware, or commercial.
Windows users can use Hyperterminal.

Internet users should ask their ISPs, if they have a shell account or if
one is available. A surprising number of ISPs offer them, but don't
advertise it. This is often a case of having to ask just the right
question to get an accurate answer. Also ask about how time is charged
for any shell account offered. It may differ from their normal
connection charges.

End
Peace
