Well, one person suggested the switch was to hold the batter in tight, did
you notice?  On the charging aspect, there is a thing about rechargeable
batteries, nickle cadmium at any rate:  Over time they wear out.  If not
drained before charging they develop a charge memory and won't properly
charge or discharge as well.  This too takes some time.   I presume you are
holding the second hand batteries that came with the laptop?  It would not
be unwise to try a new battery pack and after all, more battery packs means
more time away from power.
