Why opt for an expensive server?  A 486 (running CLI Linux) can
do the job quite comfortably.  Just put Arachne on the the clients
-- it has a built-in LAN mode.

By using a router-approach (rather than a server-approach) you don't
need a fast network.  Old coax will do fine, or even plip or slip.
