Once again: what's wrong with using Arachne on the clients?
It already works on the 8086 and doesn't require an expensive
server. An ordinary 486 (or even a good 386dx40) running CLI
Linux can provide rock-solid firewall/ip_masquerade services
for an entire network of EGA/VGA computers running DOS Arachne.
Arachne will even display in CGA, but it's not very nice
(although Michael is apparently working on an optimised CGA
version and a herc version).
The problem with your X-terminal approach is that it requires
a powerful Pentium-class server to do the processing. It
downgrades the survPCs to dumb terminals. The true survPC
solution is to use survPCs for the clients AND for the server.
This is easily done by putting DOS Arachne on the clients and
CLI Linux on the server.
Cheers,
Steven
