Steven:

To do a "true SURVPC network of computers" based on what you advocate
requires a NOS (network operating system) like Novell or WFW (Windows
for Workgroup) which resides _over_ the top of DOS on the server and the
client.

That is a difficult at best solution, which is why other options like
Linux on older 486 based servers have taken over.

If you think X-windows will only work with a Pentium based system, I
suggest you experience FreeBSD... However this is not the place to
debate personal preferences for free-UNIX OS's :)

The reality of any computer system is it should be based on what is
functional for the end users. Often times the end users are switched off
of legacy systems or applications because someone in upper management
(or a position of authority or influence) reads the trade publications
filled with articles based on advertisers publicity which is paying the
advertising rates for those trade publications. Thus you will rarely
find solutions like those being used by members of this list.

There is a definite need for well thought out low-resources solutions
like your advocating.

A great assistance to many people would be a repository of successful
installations based on low-resources computing power. This has been
done by the advocates of wireless data and mobile computing for
locations developing non-wired communications solutions.
