tomsrtbt is ideal for this.  It is a one-floppy
version of Linux that runs in a ramdisk.  It boots
fairly quickly, doesn't touch your harddrive, and
disappears when you reset.

tomsrtbt uses the ash shell, which is very similar
to bash (just a lot smaller).  It includes the vi
editor, most of the standard Linux binaries and man
pages (very helpful).  tomsrtbt even has TCP/IP
capability and can be used as a telnet or NFS client
(with built-in support for plip, slip and several
popular ethernet cards).

All in all, a very useful, rock-solid mini-distribution.
