Well, you have a point, but bear in mind that there are other options that don't require DOS; Linux can be installed through booting the kernel off a floppy disk just as you would with any other system. Unfortunately most of the whizz-bang distributions these days don't supply or provide the facility to make such floppies, but those distributions aren't really going to perform very well on machines of that specification.
