Thanks for the mention. I really like the partnership between
DOS and Linux, and I see BasicLinux as a way of supporting it.
I often get messages from BasicLinux users asking how to purge
DOS from their systems. I don't really agree with this. Even
a 5mb DOS partition is *very* useful.
(1) Changing kernels and/or root partitions is much easier in
DOS. You simply alter the loadlin.exe parameters. If a
mistake is made, it is easily fixed because the system is
still bootable.
(2) Experimenting with Linux occasionally renders it unbootable.
This has happened to me many times. However, it takes less
than a minute to fix the problem -- just use DOS to boot
BasicLinux to a ramdisk, mount the misbehaving partition
and undo the error.
Despite my enthusiasm for DOS, I must admit that the future is
bleak. Now that MicroSoft has eliminated true DOS compatibility
from Windows, the end is nigh.
