I am currently running 10.2.8 on my G4. I want to move to Tiger, but the Appletalk issue is holding me back. On my network I've got a IIfx, PowerMac C650, and a PowerMac 6300 (the server) in addition to the G4.
The oldest MacOS system software on the current network is 7.6.1 on the IIfx and C650. The PM 6300 server is running 9.1. Before I moved, I also had a LocalTalk network bridged into this Ethernet network. On the LocalTalk network I had a Macintosh 512k running System 2.0. That Mac had no issues at all communicating with all the other systems on the network, including the G4. I am 99.9% certain that nothing AppleTalk-related was broken between 10.2.8 and 10.3.9. I think the only AppleTalk issues with 10.x come up in 10.4 and newer. If my Mac 512k can do it with System 2.0, there is no reason your SE with 6.0.8 can't. It sounds to me like something just isn't set up right.
