That claim sounded like a red herring to me as well, but it's actually
very valid. The key difference between textual addresses or
openpostcode on one side, eircode on the other is that you can give
only as much precision as needed.

With eircode, you either give the 1st 3 chars or you give the full
double-lat-long-accurate postcode with 7 chars. Apparently eircode
devides ireland in 160 3-char areas. That's too large for most
business catchment areas, so anybody asking for your postcode will ask
for all chars, which is overkill and a privacy issue.
