Hi,
Creative way to work around the issue.
I have duplicated the end key in Notepad issue under Windows 8.1.

Thanks,
Chris

This works for me with notepad and the end key:

With notepad loaded:
control backslash to enter WE control panel

arrow down to cursor keys
right arrow to open
downarrow to keys
tab to show program button and press spacebar
select the end key
first action execute hot key
first action info mouse to focus
second action execute hotkey
second action info mouse prior character
save settings

Subject: Trying to make Notepad say the first and last characters on a
line, using the Home and End keys

This may well be the reason I've always hated Notepad, and why I always try
to make far more use of MS Word. I have no trouble in wird setting up the
described responses with the Home and End cursoring keys. In word, the
Cursoring key adjustments are set up so that when I press the home key on
any line in the document, I hear the first letter on that line, and when I
press the End key, I likewise hear the last character of the current line.

In Notepad, however, the Home key works in that same manner, but pressing
the End key yields no sound at all, and that's regardless of the selected
"First Action" setting, which is the #3 of the 20 or so possible selections,
and which matches the setting in Word. The Second Action" response is also
set to "Undefined". The cursoring key settings are all "global".

Even if I try setting the first action setting for the End key to "say
line", I still hear nothing. Any good ideas out there about what I might
have done? I'd like to make better use of Notepad, because Word is so rich
in disruptable settings that can force you to spend hours tracking down
problems with formatting.
