I don't have separate partitions.

In the worst case, I will uninstall The Bat! after making a backup and
setting a system restore point, and then do the fresh install you are
apparently recommending to me, by describing in such detail your own
methods.

For purposes of beta testing, I want to continue to install directly
over the previous version of TB!

That is what RitLabs advises its customers and its beta testers to do.

Therefore, I think it is important to find out if this method is
working--since I am beta testing on behalf of RL's customers, present
and future, who are not themselves beta testers.

Does that make sense?
