In case this develops into a large thread let me make official comments on
a few of your points.
NL> In the light of your comments re html and seeing that your signature
NL> separator is incorrect (I had to delete it manually in this reply) and
NL> your signature consists of (counting, counting...) 18 lines instead of
NL> the four (max) that are usually recommended, perhaps you could improve
NL> on that.
Yes, we encourage posters to restrict their signatures to no more than 6
lines, the purpose of the signature being to convey personal information
about the sender and also, important system information if applicable.
PGP signatures are not included in the line count.
NL> I have never seen a list with so much information (redundant, in my
NL> view) at the bottom of many mails. If you would like the world to know
NL> what mailer and what OS you're using, isn't there a facility in The
NL> Bat that would allow extra headers to be inserted, as in X-Mailer: The
NL> Bat 1.51, etc?
The reason for the netiquette rule to reduce signature lines is to reduce
bandwidth wastage. Placing the same information in the message headers
doesn't address that issue.
Since this is a support group, we ask that posters include information in
their signatures on what OS they're using. It's very often relevant to
problems posted and saves us having to ask. We've already travelled the
road of this information not being included in many messages and actually
requested that it be included after seeing the numerous queries for that
information.
NL> Why put a PGP signature at the bottom of a mailing to a list, other
NL> than for the simple reason that The Bat can?
PGP signing a message authenticates it. It may seem a waste of time and
unnecessary to you but others may feel otherwise. It's not our intention
to unnecessarily restrict users provided that their practice doesn't
excessively impact on bandwidth.
You may wish to compare PGP signing to long signature files in terms of
their being comparable in bandwidth wastage. However, long signature files
invariably contain highly redundant information that will not interest the
intended audience and the very purpose of your signature is to convey
useful information to your recipients.
