Thank you for all your comments. I still think it's daft to PGP-sign
every mail sent but since that seems to develop into a theological
argument about beliefs and what is or is not better, let's give that
one a rest. At least, I can cut out the PGP signatures so that I
don't see them. Not so with the overlong signatures, though (see
below).
There are still a few questions left open:
1) is it possible with The BAT to include things like X-Mailer in the
header (whether it is appropriate in this group or not?)
2) if the PGP signature has the effect to insert an extra '-' before
the sig separator, is this a BAT thing, or is that effected by PGP
and thus independent of the MUA you are using?
3) if this extra '-' does not affect the sig separator then why does
a 'reply' not cut out the signature? I understand that it can
apparently be done with a special setting in The Bat, but seeing that
the majority of the people you are corresponding with won't be using
The Bat, isn't that kind of non standard compliant? I, for example
have the option in my MUA at home (Mutt) to not show signatures.
However, the MUA does not recognise the signature as such due to the
PGP signature inserted '-', and cannot, therefore, cut it out.

and then there was even space left for a witticism
............or two.
