I received a reminder to renew my STC membership recently, and it made me wonder: How many of you are STC members? If you are a member, do you participate in a local chapter or assorted special-interest groups (SIGs)?

For those not familiar with STC (Gretchen in particular may never have heard of it because she’s so new to tech writing), the Society for Technical Communication is a professional organization for technical writers, editors, illustrators, web designers, and other similar professions.  http://www.stc.org/   The SIGs can be particularly valuable because they bring together people with like interests. Some of them have mailing lists so you can discuss topics of interest with the SIG community. The local chapters usually have organized meetings and learning opportunities where you can network with others in your area.

I have been an STC member since 2000 when I attended the STC conference in Orlando, Florida. That year, my department at Motorola entered two manuals that won awards at the national level, so it was exciting to be at the conference. My Tech Pubs group at Zebra recently entered several pieces in assorted categories in this year’s local competition. I’m hoping that at least one makes it to the national level because of the level of excitement that adds. The awards will be presented at the 2007 conference, which will be in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from May 13-16.

The choice offered with basic STC membership last year was to join one chapter and 2 SIGs or just 4 SIGs (they lowered it to 1 chapter 1 SIG or 2 SIGs this year). I used to be in the Chicago chapter of STC, but now that I work remotely from Michigan and am too far from a local chapter, I opted to join the following 4 SIGs:

·         Quality and Process Improvement

·         Single Sourcing

·         Consultants and Independent Contractors (I’m not one, but working remotely most of the time makes me sometimes feel like one)

·         Usability and User Experience

The list of SIGs is available here: http://www.stc.org/membership/sigLinks01.asp.  Gretchen, you may find the Lone Writer SIG to be of interest.  http://www.stc.org/membership/sigDescription01.asp?ID=12

Over the years, I have enjoyed my STC membership. I haven’t attended a conference since Orlando (I was pregnant and nearing my due date when it was held in Chicago in 2001), but I’m entertaining the thought of going to the conference in Minneapolis next year.

Have a great day!

Donna
