I have never gotten to travel for tech writing jobs. Back in '94 I worked for Motorola and they had a mega-cool product (Marco) that they were showing at MacWorld.
The Marco was cutting-edge technology back then, and everyone who saw it wanted one. It was a Newton PDA (remember those??) with a wireless modem, and it was no larger than a paperback book. Unfortunately, Motorola at that time couldn't market their way out of a wet paper bag, and the product didn't go anywhere. I was the contract TW, and because I was contract, they wouldn't take me along to the show. Everyone else went, and all the engineers complained about having to work the booth. I WANTED to work the booth, and told them I even had a free place to stay (relatives), but alas, I remained home. :-( It's also on our plans for each writer to visit one of our customer sites to see how they use the product and documentation on-site. Our manager and one writer have gone so far; the rest of us are waiting our turns. Oh, and I get to go to the STC Conf. in Minneapolis -- does that count? -Carla - CONFIDENTIAL- This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential, and may also be legally privileged.
