Up until now, none of my jobs as a tech writer have required travel, and
none of them involved customer contact for tech writers. As Carla
mentioned earlier, we may get to go to some customer sites soon, but it
hasn't happened for either of us yet.

I got to go to the STC conference in Orlando in 2000, and I get to go to
the one in Minneapolis this year. Having entries make it to the
international competition helps convince management that you should go.
:-)

Because I have a family, a house, and pets, travel for work doesn't
appeal to me much. Ironically, traveling has become a big part of my
current job, and it's of my own doing. My husband and I moved more than
400 miles away from the Chicago area where my job is based. Fortunately,
I was able to get permission to work remotely part-time, which made it
possible for me to keep my job. For a while, I was bouncing back and
forth like a tennis ball, traveling in one direction or the other every
weekend. Right now, I work from home for 2 or 3 weeks, and then I spend
a week back in the Chicago area. As much as I would rather not travel at
all, the arrangement is still a blessing. It certainly beats flipping
burgers!
