Over the years I've actually gotten the opportunity to travel a fair bit. I've done site visits to places that used our products like Lawrence Livermore Labs where they were using our real-time operating system to control attempts at nuclear fusion as well as a paper manufacturer that was using the same RTOS to control paper production. I've been to COMDEX four straight years in the old days for two companies doing booth duty and presentations as well as a demo-er in the Microsoft booth for our MS-related application. (If I ever hear "OK, demo me" again I'll have a fit.) I got a job to start a doc group for a company in New Zealand and moved down there for two years. I've gone to a bunch of STC conferences on the company's dime (being a presenter helps smooth the path). I spent six weeks in Zürich as the proposal coordinator for a huge project. And I got to spend three weeks in Bangalore as we started up an outsourcing effort - my job was to teach then the product and answer their questions.
All in all, I can safely say "Become a tech writer and see the world!"
